Toyota lifts profit forecast as disaster woes fade (AP)

TOKYO ? Toyota's quarterly profit slid 13.5 percent on production setbacks caused by last year's tsunami disaster and the flooding in Thailand, but Japan's top automaker raised its annual profit forecast, saying a recovery is on track.

Toyota Motor Corp. reported Tuesday an 80.9 billion yen ($1.05 billion) profit for the October-December third quarter, down from 93.6 billion yen a year earlier.

Showing confidence in its ability to bounce back, the manufacturer of the Prius gas-electric hybrid, Lexus luxury models and the Camry sedan raised its annual profit forecast to 200 billion yen ($2.6 billion) from 180 billion yen ($2.3 billion).

Still, the higher forecast is barely half of what Toyota raked in the previous fiscal year at 408 billion yen.

Last year was tough for Japanese automakers as the earthquake and tsunami in northeastern Japan devastated key suppliers. The flooding in Thailand in late 2011 hit them with new supply problems just as they were starting to recover from the March disaster.

Toyota Senior Managing Officer Takahiko Ijichi pointed to the strong yen as also behind the declining profits.

The dollar dropped to about 77 yen for the latest quarter from 83 yen the same period in 2010.

Toyota posted 4.865 trillion yen ($63.4 billion) in quarterly sales, up 4.1 percent from the previous year.

Although Toyota lost sales as a result of production disruptions, such problems have gradually been fixed.

Toyota said Tuesday its major plant in the U.S., the one in Mississippi that makes the Corolla, added a second shift, bringing annual production capacity to 150,000 vehicles, as planned.

The plant's construction was stalled after the 2008 financial crisis, and vehicle production finally began in October last year.

PFT: Cut before Super Bowl, Underwood rejoins Pats

040829_warner_hmed.standardAP

Quarterback Kurt Warner retired two years ago with a body of work that likely will put him in Canton.? If he gets there, he may not be welcoming Eli Manning with open arms.

In an appearance with Burns and Gambo on Arizona Sports 620 in Phoenix, Warner made the case against Eli?s potential induction into the Hall of Fame.

?I fully disagree with that,? Warner said of talk that Eli will get in.? ?You know because I know we put a lot of weight on championships, and rightfully so.? But championships are won as a team, and I?m fully convinced of that.? You never see one guy ? a great player, great quarterback ? carry a team through the playoffs and into a Super Bowl and win a Super Bowl that way.? I?ve never seen it.? You know even in that game [Super Bowl XLVI], it?s 21-17.? That?s the game.? There wasn?t a quarterback just up and down the field carrying the team.

?Yeah, he made the plays down the stretch, no question about it,? added Warner, who spent the 2004 season with Eli in New York.? ?He?s had two great playoff runs, or his team has had two great playoff runs.? But I also look at the rest of his career.? I mean, he has an 82 . . . quarterback rating throughout his career.? You know, he?s had five of his eight seasons where he has thrown 16 interceptions or more.? His completion percentage on his career is 58 percent.? To me, those aren?t Hall of Fame numbers and by that I mean every time you step on the field you?re a game changer, you?re a difference maker.? And I don?t believe Eli Manning has been that guy until this year.? I think this year is the first time in his career when he?s become that guy.?

Warner said that, if Eli performs like he did this year for five more seasons, then he?ll be worthy of inclusion among the league?s all-time greats.? Without that, Warner thinks Eli should be kept out due to the fact that he has been ?extremely inconsistent throughout his career.?

It?s persuasive stuff, despite the potential bias that a guy like Warner may have when it comes to setting the bar for inclusion.? Warner won only one Super Bowl, and he?s less than 5,000 passing yards and only 23 touchdown passes ahead of Eli.? But Warner was twice the league MVP, which under his own explanation of what it takes to get to Canton makes his career seem more impressive.

I?m not saying Warner is twisting the standard to suit his own interests deliberately, but it?s normal where there?s no clear, objective formula to define greatness in a way that enhances the great things the person providing the definition has done.? Warner has been a ?game changer? more often than Eli, even though Eli has won two Super Bowls ? and two Super Bowl MVP awards ? and barring injury Eli?s final career stats likely will dwarf Warner?s.

But at least Warner is willing to take a position publicly and defend it, unlike the 44 men and women who under the cover of the Hall of Fame?s by laws can?t be compelled to provide details regarding why they?ve voted the way they?ve voted, and why others in the room have cast their own ballots.

Further, many people find the pleasant sound of the sleet to be the best way to obtain a great night nap or even an afternoon nap.

After getting well over the 8 hours of compulsory sleep, many consent that the best way to outlay the day inside is by examination cinema and listening to music.

Both the automobile camping and the Mt. Lassen outing will be from Feb. 18 to 20 and are now open for registration. All trips add travel and students can pointer up in person at OA or by mission its office at (530) 752-1995.

Further, Dwyer mentioned students could go on their own trips and lease equipment, such as tents, napping bags, skis, kayaks and more from OA for a really low price.

?Students obtain a great bonus from us and we have lots of equipment,? Dwyer said.

More data about trips, sign-ups and rentals may be found on OA?s authorized website, or you can stop by OA in between or after class.

With these resources and actions so simply accessible, hopefully the stormy day blues won?t be so badly draining. And still, for a few choose few, the sleet can obviously lighten their day. Just inquire first-year diplomatic scholarship leading Ryan Wonders.

?I similar to to obtain ready to go up on a stormy day and go for a walk since it doesn?t sleet that frequently and we wish to suffer it when it does,? Wonders said.

Europe's cold snap claims more victims, travel hit (Reuters)

KIEV/LONDON (Reuters) ? Bitterly cold weather sweeping across Europe claimed more victims Sunday, brought widespread disruption to transport services, and left thousands without power with warnings that low temperatures would continue into next week.

Hundreds have lost their lives in eastern Europe as freezing weather sweeps across the continent westwards, while major airports warned that services would be delayed or cancelled.

Steven Keates, a weather forecaster at Britain's Met Office,

said the severe wintry conditions were expected to last, and spread to other areas.

"It will still be very cold, maybe not quite the exceptional temperatures we've seen this last week, but still very cold," he told Reuters.

"(It will be) perhaps turning increasingly unsettled across southern and eastern Europe, so that will probably bring a risk of snow for Italy across to Greece and up round the Balkan countries."

A state of emergency was declared in Bosnia after the cold snap claimed its seventh victim, and avalanches and strong winds cut off hundreds of villages in eastern parts.

Helicopters were needed to deliver aid packages to mountainous areas and take the sick to hospital.

Greece also declared an emergency situation in the western Peloponnese peninsula after heavy rain caused flooding and an 82-year old woman drowned while trying to escape her house.

Nine more deaths from freezing temperatures were registered in Ukraine overnight, emergency services said, taking the death toll to 131 from a nine-day cold spell, the most severe in the country for six years with night temperatures down as low as minus 33 Celsius (minus 27 Fahrenheit) in parts.

HELP FOR HOMELESS

Many of the dead were homeless people with bodies being found in the streets under snow, in rivers and in doorways. More than 3,000 heated tents have been set up around the country to provide makeshift accommodation for the homeless.

In Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk asked local authorities to waive the ban on admitting inebriated individuals to homeless shelters as eight more people died taking the death toll to 53, PAP news agency reported.

The extreme cold also caused the death of at least three people in Hungary, national news agency MTI said, and at least five people froze to death in Lithuania over the weekend in Lithuania as the temperature fell below -30 Celsius overnight.

Transport networks were also badly hit as the chilling weather moved west, prompting severe weather warnings to be issued across much of France and Britain.

London's Heathrow, Europe's busiest airport, said it had cancelled about half of its normal services as more than 15cm (6 inches) of snow fell in parts of England overnight and temperatures dropped to almost -10 Celsius.

Many of Britain's other airports were forced to shut runways overnight and warned of further disruption, while rail services were affected and motorways near London were brought to a standstill, forcing some divers to abandon their vehicles.

In Paris, the Eiffel Tower received a coating of snow and more downfalls were expected to bring problems to the French capital's main airports.

The French death toll rose to five, after a 12-year old boy died of hypothermia after falling into a frozen pond in eastern France and two homeless people were found dead.

Meanwhile about 86,000 Italians were left without power because of trees falling on power lines, Livio Gallo, head of state power company Enel told SkyTG24 television.

The deaths of 13 people were blamed on the bad weather, Italian police said, including three men who died of heart attacks while shoveling snow.

Two highways in central Italy that cross the Apenines remained closed, the Interior Ministry said, while in Rome, schools and public offices are to remain closed until at least Tuesday, Mayor Gianni Alemanno said.

He urged people to get out and clean sidewalks, and said the city had handed out 2,350 free shovels.

FUN FOR SOME

While the cold snap has brought death and misery across Europe, some made the most of the conditions.

Snowboarders took to the streets of the Bosnian capital Sarajevo after it was blanketed by a record snowfall of 107 cm.

The traditional Sartai horse race on ice also went ahead in Lithuania and local media reported more than a dozen men and women from a health club went swimming in a lake near Vilnius.

Meanwhile in Belgium, police found that overnight temperatures of about -10 Celsius were so low that machines to test motorists' alcohol levels did not work.

The things that I have learned through divorce ... - Step Talk

I was brought up in a concept that it takes a village to raise a child. My grandmother lived with me for the first 9 yrs of my life, after that we still had daily contact. I knew that if I screwed up in the neighborhood, i would get a tongue lashing from the neighbor, and my parents would know before I got home. I was brought up that children were to be seen not heard, and that I was a direct reflection upon my parents, and that you respect your elders.

When I divorced, I moved in with my parents (mom and sd). They helped raise my daughter (10mo at the time) while I went to school. After graduation I stayed on with them, my sdad babysat, was my taxi service for DD back and forth to school. More importantly my dd was brought up with the same concept that family pulls together to help the one with the broken wing. I respected my parents home, I didn't like living there, but it allowed me to give a life to my daughter that we would not have had at the time- it was welfare, or parents). SHe had my sdad wrapped around her little finger by the time she was 18 months old. She walked on water - and he did too! my mom and sdad actually successfully blended a family. While my step sibs are not as "close" as my bio brother- we have one thing in common - our parents and it is enough to bring us together an keep in contact.

Right after my divorce, my mother sat me down (she was a NCP, and so was my SD). She let me rant rave and say mean things about my ex. Then we put our wine glasses down, and she said........now what are you really going to do - because the one thing you need to understand is that custody can change at any given moment, and you need to learn to treat him like you would want to be treated if he had custody. SO I was one of those annoying ex wives that constantly called.

I gave update about doctors appts
Dentist appts
school activities
daycare providers and choices
ear piercings
drivers ed
surgeries
bad attitudes and fights.
makeup
cell phones,
first tooth
first steps
etc.

He was a long distance dad from the time that she was 2.5. He received 90% of her school papers, knew what was talked about in every parent teacher conference.

If he would have helped me make the decision when we were married he helped me make it as her parent. In 19 years I never took him back for more support even though he is making 2 times what he was making when we divorced (she is a full time college student and we live in a state where he would have to help with that and support until 21). I never even thought about it. Occasionally I had to ask him for something extra. He obliged. He's remarried now has a young ss, I try not to ask for help now as I know he has a new family.

When I remarried, I did everything to be included and to include skids in our family. DH is NCP - I was met with resistance from the BM. Our 12 years have been hard, they have taken their toll on me. I took my role serious. I treated the skids like my own- what does that mean? They had beds, rooms, clothes, toys and experiences. If I would do it for mine I would do it for his. I love them dearly which is the reason that I am angry about what I have lost. I have lost the opportunity to love them, to know them, to be a part of their lives. They have lost the opportunity to love me, to know me, and to be a part of my life.

What would I like to tell BM
It takes a village to raise a child. I am not the mother, didn't want to be, but could have been a part of their lives that would have made your life easier.
I could have curtailed my husband's anger and turned that around into respect for you as a parent, instead your treatment of him regarding his place in his children's lives fueled even more - it became an all consuming inferno - I would like to thank you for that Sad - it almost engulfed me to.
My skids could have and would have had everything or most everything that you wanted them to have (except the car).

BM, most of all...........they would have had their dad's love and involvement. For all your insecurities and fears you insisted on taking that away. 3 yr old children don't tell their BM's that they hate their dads house without guidance to hate. SS loved me we were inseparable. SD would have loved being here if you had told her that it was ok to love me. OH you said you did.

You have your children- congratulations - you have entitled children who hate their dad, who are angry and depressed, who have been in counseling for 4 yrs to deal with their "rough" life.

I sit back, toast my mom and say thanks, I treated my ex as I wanted to be treated if I was a NCP. I never lost sight that EX was the dad, as such he had certain rights, above all he had the right to be a parent and be treated as such.

just my thoughts tonight as I am sad that my skids are not a part of my family.
