Record heat scorches Washington region

Down on the tarmac, Dennis Frederick, Nathan Laryea and Tito Williams were not.

It was a bit warmer there, perhaps 130 degrees. And as they stood, arms folded, in sweat-soaked T-shirts and bright orange vests, they contemplated what awaited them in the cargo hold of the AirTran flight.

They figured 145 degrees, at least? Maybe 120 bags each? About 30 or 40 pounds per bag? Everything off and the new load packed after about 30 minutes in the hold?

Yes, indeed, it was hot Friday. Everywhere, people chattered about it, notably complete strangers who tend to break the normal silence in elevators and grocery lines whenever the weather ? hot, cold, snowy or rainy ? gives them something in common to discuss.

But it is not the 19th century.

There is air conditioning virtually everywhere for anyone determined to escape the heat.

Any number of predictable things happened Friday: Swimming pools were busy, people ate more ice cream and those who could do so fled town early for the beaches. The laundry list of heat warnings was trundled out for amnesiacs and visitors who have never known Washington on the eve of July.

The casual observer might have noted that the pace of the city seemed to slow in the heat, but that happens in this town every Friday ? winter, spring, summer or fall.

The people whose jobs allow them no escape ? hot dog vendors, construction workers, bike messengers, meter maids, baggage handlers ? sweated.

Some folks sought satisfaction or acclaim by exercising outdoors during the worst of it and sweated along with them.

How hot was it?

Records were set across the region as the heat wave that had bedeviled the Midwest reached full blossom here. The thermometer hit 104 degrees at National and hung there most of the afternoon. Dulles International Airport broke 100 degrees. All-time records also fell all over the South? 109 degrees in Nashville; 108 in Columbia, S.C.; 105 in Raleigh, N.C.; and 104 in Charlotte.

Just as it had been in the Midwest, the heat was blamed for several deaths, including three in Virginia.

?You need to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade,? said Williams, who acknowledged that shade is in short supply on an airport taxiway. At 35, he?s worked for eight years with Flight Service, the contractor that supplies baggage handlers for AirTran and several other airlines.

Frederick figured they each muscle about 1,000 bags a day.

?This humidity is unhealthy,? added Laryea, who is spending his first summer on the crew. ?We?ve had a couple of hot ones, but this takes the cake.?

Across town, Moira O?Malley, a 19-year-old American University student, and her friends thought Friday would be a great day to circulate a petition for immigration reforms. Then she stepped outside.

?Whoa. It?s so humid I can?t breathe,? she said, sweating dark patches through her T-shirt. ?We picked the worst possible day.?

Almost no one stopped to talk as they sought signatures at Farragut Park.

Except for a trio who tossed a ball for all of three minutes, the park was virtually empty.

In another park, McPherson Square, members of the Occupy D.C. movement returned to reclaim the ground where they camped out through the winter until departing two weeks ago. But Friday?s fiery temperatures ruined some of their planned protests, and they headed instead for air-conditioned museums and cafes nearby.

The few who remained guzzled cases of water.

But no one in town had it hotter than what Frederick, Laryea and Williams experienced at National.

?Gatorade,? Laryea said. ?Water?s not enough to replace the electrolytes.?

Frederick, at 6 feet 6 inches and 320 pounds, said working baggage in the heat was far worse than on the most frigid days of winter.

?When it?s cold out, you can just put on layers,? he said. ?And tomorrow .?.?.?

?It?s going be hotter,? they all said in unison.

Annie Gowen, Lena Sun and Susan Svrluga contributed to this report.

Rutube, The YouTube Of Russia, Links Up With Facebook, Gets YouTube, Vimeo Vids In Aggregation Pivot

rutubeA new chapter today for Rutube, the YouTube of Russia: the user-generated video site, long competing against YouTube in its home market and losing, has redesigned and is now turning itself into more of an aggregator that will host content from Google's video giant as well as Vimeo, as part of a new content injection that will also include full-length feature films. Rutube has also announced an integration with Facebook that will let users watch videos on Rutube that have been shared on the social network. Similar deals with Facebook's Russian rival, Vkontakte, and Twitter will be following in the autumn. The moves are part of a new beta version of the site that Rutube, owned by the Russian conglomerate Gazprom, will also include the addition of premium, branded content -- a move that it hopes will increase engagement and page views among its 7.1 million unique monthly users, and help it better compete against YouTube, which has 24.9 million uniques, according to comScore.

AR GOP and Dems Sharply Divided Over Ruling

The political fight between Arkansas Democrats and Republicans over healthcare reform is far from over.

"Republicans have definitely used this for political gain," said Candace Martin, spokeswoman for the Democratic Party of Arkansas.

"The Democrats threw the first partisan punch in this battle," said Doyle Webb, Chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party.

At issue: The Supreme Court's 5-4 ruling to uphold the Affordable Heathcare Act of 2010.

Under the law, all adult Americans are required to buy health insurance starting in 2014. All businesses with 50 or more employees are required to offer coverage or face hefty fines.

The healthcare law was the centerpiece of Democratic President Barack Obama's first two years in office and the flashpoint of heated debate throughout the country over the government's role in healthcare versus; the private sector; and individual rights and responsibility.

Political expert Dan Greeberg said the decision taught everyone a lesson.

"For months people have been hoping that the Supreme Court would save us from the political process. What we learned today was that the political process is going to be the one to decide these issue," Greenberg said.

The divide along party lines is deep.

A Pew Research poll one week before the Supreme Court decision showed 75 percent of Republicans would be happy if justices threw out the new law altogether; 62 percent of Democrats would be happy if they upheld the law in its entirety.

Among the public, however, the divide is not as deep.

Forty-three percent said they approve of the law, 48 percent disapprove.

The poll was conducted between June 6-17.

US heat Wave: Three-digit temperatures recorded across Midwest

US heat wave: Record-breaking temperatures have closed schools and sent people seeking refuge ... at the zoo

By Kevin Murphy,?Reuters / June 29, 2012

As temperatures soar with heat indexes in the 100 degree plus range in the New Orleans Metro area, children and adults find the will to chill by taking in the Cool Zoo water park area at the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans, Wednesday, June 27, 2012.

Temperatures soared?across?the Midwest on Thursday, reaching a blistering 108 degrees Fahrenheit (42 Celsius) in?St. Louis, and possibly causing two deaths in?KansasCity,?Missouri, as a massive?heat?wave pressed eastward from the Rockies.

In?Kansas?City, where the temperature rose to 105 (40 C), the city health department said two deaths were being investigated to determine if they were?heat-related.

A massive high-pressure system over the Midwest caused triple-digit temperatures in?Chicago?and several other cities. The oppressive?heat?is expected to linger for several days.

The searing?heat?presented a challenge for the?St. Louis?Zoo, which provided misting machines, large fans and cooling stations for visitors and took steps to cool down the animals.

"When it gets hot like this, we like to take a bone and freeze it into a big block of ice then throw it into a pool where the big cats can play with it," said?Jack Grisham, who heads the zoo's animal collection. "We'll freeze bananas and oranges and throw them to the primates as well."

Hill City,?Kansas, which has been the hottest spot in the nation for five days, reached 108 (42 C) Thursday afternoon, the?National Weather Service?said. The thermometer hit 115 (46 C) on Wednesday in the?northwest Kansas?farm community.

"It feels like you have a big old furnace blowing in your face," said?Rayson Brachtenbach, a technician at Elliott Plumbing, Heating, Air Conditioning and Electric in Hill City.

Brachtenbach said the hot weather kept the company busy repairing air conditioning systems.

A city in the Midwest having the nation's high temperature for five days in a row is very unusual, said?Chris Foltz, a weather service meteorologist in?Goodland,?Kansas.

"It's what you expect in the desert of?Nevada?or?California," Foltz said.

Sustained heat

Drought conditions have contributed to the early and sustained?heat?this summer, said?Alex Sosnowski, expert senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com.

"A lot of these places haven't had a lot of rain, and dry soil contributes to?heat," Sosnowski said, when asked why the high temperatures are being seen so early in the summer. "The sun's energy doesn't go into evaporating moisture, so it heats the ground and that heats the air. It takes a really big rainfall event to bust a drought like this."

Though scattered thunderstorms are expected to dial down the?heat?in the Midwest on Friday, Sosnowski does not see anything that would make much of an impact in dry areas.

The weather conditions have contributed to?Colorado?wildfires that have destroyed hundreds of homes. The?heat?and drought conditions also are damaging crops. U.S. corn prices have soared 17 percent this month as the hot dry weather persists in the main growing area of the Midwest.

Farther to the east, it was 102 (39 C)in?Cincinnati?and 103 (39 C) in?Nashville,?Tennessee.

"It's when you stop sweating and you get goose bumps that you worry," said?Sean Lachendro, one of a trio installing fiber-optic line for?T-Mobile?along a south?Nashville?roadside.

In?Chicago, the high temperature reached 100 degrees (38 C) for the first time in seven years. Summer school was closed Thursday for 10?Chicago?public schools without air conditioning.

In?Indiana, burn bans are in effect in 74 of 92 counties, and 45 counties have restrictions on shooting off fireworks.

With temperatures soaring, officials from?Kansas?to the?Carolinas?asked residents to take steps to stay cool and check on friends and neighbors. In Birmingham,?Alabama, police were checking on the sick and elderly.

"We want to ensure our citizens remain safe during the excessive?heat?outbreak,"?Birmingham PoliceChief A.C. Roper said. (Reporting by Mary Wisniewski, Kevin Murphy, Bruce Olson, Tim Ghianni, Christine Stebbins, Keith Coffman, and Susan Guyett; Editing by David Bailey and Stacey Joyce)

theodore ? Mary W. Landy Blog ? Outdoor Bbq grill Grills ...

Most people just like portable grills because of their size, because they take up less space. Room considerations will certainly depend on where you reside. If you live in the apartment, transportable charcoal along with propane grills are your best bet. In case you have a home by incorporating space, you?ll be able to also think about natural gas along with larger cigarette smokers.

You can either purchase these in your community store or perhaps online. For cheap deals, take a look at eBay or Amazon while they have special on-line offers from time to time.

Backyard grill grates must be cleaned employing a wire grill brush cost to buy a green egg grill immediately after you use them because if you don?t do so, it will likely be a lot more difficult for you to clean them. For the reason that food quit on the grates rapidly hardens. In addition to this, solidified foods additionally promote the introduction of rust if they are left for some time on the grill grates. Brushing the grill even though it?s still hot and ahead of the food sets out to harden is likely to make the task of cleaning it simpler. When your shelves cool down, saturate them in a bucket filled with warm water and a quarter cup of baking soft drink and dish-washing liquid. Allow them to soak for about an hour. In case there are still allergens left on your own grates after you relax them, work with a steel made of wool pad as well as scrub to wash them off of.

There are also a lot of gas Bar-b-que grill accessories nowadays that can help to make barbecuing simpler. There are several recognized brands of BBQ grills in the marketplace these days. One of the most well recognize grills are Weber, Coleman and also Brinkman.

Natural gas grills need more room and likely a fixed area. These types of grills are hooked up to the home?s gas line. If you need to cook various meats fast and don?t require a easily transportable model, it is really an option for anyone.

When it comes to smoking cigarettes, the Egg?s thick ceramic partitions are perfect insulation for cooking from long, reduced temperatures had to tenderize and smoke meats. (AP) ? President Barack Obama told lawmakers at an annual White House congressional picnic Wednesday that despite their differences they should keep in mind that they are first Americans working toward a better future for the country.

Lawmakers of both parties gathered at the White House's South Lawn one day before two partisan conflicts came to a head ? a Supreme Court decision on Obama's signature health care law and a contempt of Congress vote in the House against Attorney General Eric Holder.

"We're thrilled that you have at least one day where you got a chance to be together in Washington and nobody is arguing," Obama said.

Under sunny skies, legislators, their spouses and children mingled with White House aides among tents and scores of picnic tables. A Marine Corp band played country and western tunes.

Holder was in the crowd, pausing to chat briefly with Republican Rep. Peter King of New York. House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, was scheduled to attend, his office said.

Obama, dressed in casual slacks and shirt, joined the crowd with first lady Michelle Obama at his side to a few cries of "Four more years."

"For all the political differences that are sometimes expressed in this town, we are first and foremost Americans -- not Democrats or Republicans," Obama said. "And I think all of us want to make sure that during extraordinarily challenging times for this country that we constantly keep that in mind. That's what the people who sent us here are expecting.

"And I know that each of us in our own way are hopeful that because of the work that we do here we pass on something a little better and a little brighter to our kids and our grandkids."

Windows Phone 7.8 update gets shown off

Users of Windows Phone might have felt a bit put out at the news that Windows Phone 8, with all its fancy new features, would not be coming to their hardware ? even the flagship Nokia Lumia 900. But all is not lost: one of the cooler pieces, the customizable start screen, will in fact be coming to older handsets. And Microsoft has just put up a little demo of it on video.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that doesn't mean we get privileged information about Microsoft's products and services, nor does it influence our opinion of them.)

No doubt it's a cool feature for homescreen customization, more straightforward than Android's widgets and more robust than iOS's... nothing. Most users will be happy to have the extra functionality.

But there's still consternation among purchasers of the much-hyped Lumia 900: many feel it was little more than a bait and switch to sell the device as a top-of-the-line one only to make it obsolete almost instantly with a new OS it can't use. There's truth to that, and Android and iOS customers know the sting of seeing a new version of their favored OS debut with no plans to bring it to older devices.

The update should come to any phone currently running Windows?7.5 "Mango." There's a little more info here at the page for the update, but at the moment there are only a couple features listed, and no date for release.

LG slips out Optimus L3 DualSim for Russia and Ukraine, keeps you in touch with both Kiev and Kursk

LG slips out Optimus L3 DualSim for Russia and Ukraine, keeps you in touch with both Kiev and KurskLG's Optimus L3 was always designed with modest ambitions -- mostly of scooping up the starter smartphone crowd -- but a new variant for Russia and the Ukraine has our ears perked. The tiny L3 DualSim includes two SIM slots to let locals hop between two different phone numbers with a switch. Ostensibly it's to give jetsetting businesspeople a way to switch between their home and work phone lines, although the abundance of prepaid service options in the two countries makes us think there's some cost-saving involved as well. The tweaked L3 isn't just another dual-SIM conversion; LG has also seen fit to overcome qualms about performance with an 800MHz Snapdragon replacing the 600MHz of the original. Sadly, we're not seeing any upgrades to the creaky Android 2.3 install or the 3-megapixel camera, so this won't let you get a shrunken L5 on the cheap. At a price of 1,500 Ukranian grivnas (6,169 Russian rubles, or $186) without a contract, however, we suspect many Muscovites and Sevastopolians won't have objections to picking up the L3 DualSim for themselves come the July release.

Give 3-D printing a try? Yoda says do it

15 hrs.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, we?ll all use 3-D printers to make new tools, replacement body parts?and dinner. In the meantime, early adopters are already giving the technology a try with downloadable blueprints for characters such as Yoda, that wise Jedi master of "Star Wars" fame.

The time-lapse?demonstration is courtesy of?YouTube user BusyBotz, who uses a commercial MakerBot Replicator 3-D printer?which costs?about $1,750. The 3-D model for Yoda is available from Thingiverse, a MakerBot-powered website where users share their digital designs.

The website aims to get people to share designs to feed into their 3-D printers, spreading the adoption of the technology, which MakerBot hopes will be widespread so they can sell more printers.

BusyBotz?s demonstration with Yoda showcases the fine detail available when the printer is set to build in 0.1 mm -high layer increments ? that is, Yoda is built up one 0.1 mm layer at a time.?

All things built with the 3-D printers are built layer upon layer.?

"There is a significant increase in detail compared to printing the same model at 0.2 mm," BusyBotz notes. ?It takes longer, but in a print like this, it is worth it.?

For those who view the full video below and think they might want to give one of?these nifty printers a try themselves, just remember this sage advice Yoda gives a young Luke Skywalker:

?Try not, do or do not, there is no try.?

Hafla food idea ? enough with the hummus, try Karkaday! ? Jade ...

Instead of adding yet another serve of Hummus and flat bread to the 10 others on the table at your next Hafla, consider brewing up some Karkaday! Hibiscus tea is ubiquitous in Egypt and a refreshing drink often fondly remembered by returned travellers. Karkaday is reputed to have been a favoured drink of the Pharaohs and it is no wonder.

Karkaday from Egypt

Karkaday I bought in Egypt

An herbal tea drink consumed both hot and cold, it?s loaded with flavonoids which may:

  • Help support memory and concentration
  • Boost the effectiveness of vitamin C
  • Help promote a healthy heart and immune system
  • Support blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within the normal range
  • Help you manage weight challenges

Karkaday is Hibiscus tea, an infusion made from the calyces (sepals) of the Hibiscus sabdariffa flower. It is popular throughout the world but goes by a variety of names. In Italy, Egypt and the Sudan? it is referred to as Karkaday (spelling varies),? but elsewhere the names vary. It is referred to as roselle (another common name for the hibiscus flower), flor de Jamaica in Latin America, Chai Kujarat in Iraq, Chai Torsh in Iran, gumamela in the Philippines, bissap or wonjo in West Africa, sorrel in Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, red sorrelin the wider Caribbean, and other names in other regions.

This is what the loose leaves look like.

You can buy hibiscus tea (or whatever it is called in your region) already made up as tea bags from a health food shop, herbalist or sometimes even from the supermarket. It can be served as a simple infusion (i.e. pour hot water on it) or work on an easy variation to impress your belly dance buddies. Hibiscus tea has a tantalisingly fresh, cranberry-like flavour and an attractive, deep red colour. Many drinkers like to add a sweetener like sugar to the beverage to reduce the tartness but that is a matter of taste.

Here is a suggested recipe that would give you approx. 14 cups full but you can make just one cup for yourself easily enough. Just put a small amount of hibiscus in an infuser (a use a tea bag), put it in your cup, pour on hot water from kettle and add sugar if its not sweet enough for you!

Karkaday Ingredients

  • 1 cup karkaday ?loose leaves (or hibiscus tea bags if not available)
  • 1 gallon (3.8 Litres) water.
  • ? cup Sugar (optional)
  • 1t orange flower water (optional)

Cooking Instructions

  • Boil water in a large saucepan.
  • Add karkaday.
  • Stir in sugar till it dissolves.
  • For a stronger, redder tea ? Leave for an hour.
  • Drain karkaday with a fine holed sieve to get rid of leaves.
  • Either cool in refrigerator or serve hot.

?

?I think I could do with a cuppa while I think out my next move?

You can find other hibiscus recipes here

?No need to wait for a Hafla though, next time you need a quick way to quench your thirst, why not try the tea used by the Pharaohs?

Have you tried karkaday? What?s your favourite recipe? Hot or cold? Comment below.

UN honours local groups with Equator Prize for sustainable development work

UN News Centre ???Translate This Article
25 June 2012

21 June 2012 - Twenty-five local and indigenous groups were honoured on Wednesday evening by the United Nations for their outstanding contributions to sustainable development.

'Tonight's event is about honouring the great innovation and leadership which is coming from the world's local communities,' said the Administrator of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), Helen Clark, at the Equator Prize gala ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Awarded by UNDP's Equator Initiative, the Prize recognizes outstanding local initiatives that are working to advance sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities? issues also at the heart of the discussions underway at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rioplus20) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The winners included a forest protection community initiative in Fiji, an Egyptian medicinal plant association that cultivates species to create alternative livelihoods, a women's artisan group in Colombia that recycles plastic and reduces waste, and an enterprise in Swaziland that teaches women how to cultivate seeds and offers environmental education.

'Organizations which win the Equator Prize show through their actions how the sustainable management of ecosystems is not only good for the environment, but empowers local people and increases their capacities and livelihood options,' Miss Clark said.

'Moving forward from Rio 20 it will be critical to acknowledge the central role of community-based organizations and local initiatives in delivering sustainable development solutions,' she added.

This year's winners were selected from 812 nominations submitted by communities in 113 countries across the developing world. The 25 winners will each receive $5,000, with 10 selected for special recognition and a total of $20,000.

The ceremony was hosted by renowned Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil, and counted with the presence of other leaders in business and sustainable development, such as the founder of the Grameen Bank and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, Muhammad Yunus, the founder of the Virgin Group, Richard Branson, and a US actor and UN Goodwill Ambassador on Biodiversity, Edward Norton.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Equator Prize, which is awarded biennially.

More than 40,000 people?including heads of State and government, parliamentarians, mayors, UN officials, business and civil society leaders?are attending Rioplus20, between 20-22 June. It seeks to shape new policies to promote global prosperity, reduce poverty and advance social equity and environmental protection.

(AP) ? Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi declared Saturday that the Nobel Peace Prize she won while under house arrest 21 years ago helped to shatter her sense of isolation and ensured that the world would demand democracy in her military-controlled homeland.

Suu Kyi received two standing ovations inside Oslo's city hall as she gave her long-delayed acceptance speech to the Norwegian Nobel Committee in front of Norway's King Harald, Queen Sonja and about 600 dignitaries. The 66-year-old champion of political freedom praised the power of her 1991 Nobel honor both for saving her from the depths of personal despair and shining an enduring spotlight on injustices in distant Myanmar.

"Often during my days of house arrest, it felt as though I were no longer a part of the real world," she said to a silent chamber, which was lined with rainbows of freshly cut zinnias and towers of orchids and gladiolas. "There was the house which was my world. There was the world of others who also were not free but who were together in prison as a community. And there was the world of the free. Each one was a different planet pursuing its own separate course in an indifferent universe.

"What the Nobel Peace Prize did was to draw me once again into the world of other human beings, outside the isolated area in which I lived, to restore a sense of reality to me. ... And what was more important, the Nobel Prize had drawn the attention of the world to the struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma. We were not going to be forgotten," she said during her 40-minute oration.

Suu Kyi, who since winning freedom in 2010 has led her National League for Democracy party into opposition in Myanmar's parliament, offered cautious support for the first tentative steps toward democratic reform in her country. But she said progress would depend both on maintaining foreign pressure on the army-backed government ? and on carefully managing the ethnic tensions threatening to tear apart the country.

"If I advocate cautious optimism, it is not because I do not have faith in the future, but because I do not want to encourage blind faith. Without faith in the future, without the conviction that democratic values and fundamental human rights are not only necessary but possible for our society, our movement could not have been sustained throughout the destroying years," she said, referring to the past two decades since Myanmar's military leaders rejected her party's overwhelming triumph in 1990 elections, one year after Suu Kyi's own imprisonment.

Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, introduced Suu Kyi as a leader of "awe-inspiring tenacity, sacrifice and firmness of principle."

"In your isolation, you have become a moral leader for the whole world," he said from the podium, turning to the seated Suu Kyi.

"Your voice became increasingly clear the more the military regime tried to isolate you. Your cause mobilized your people and prevailed over a massive military junta. Whenever your name is mentioned or when you speak, your words bring new energy and hope to the entire world," Jagland said to applause.

Suu Kyi, in a traditional Burmese gown of purple, lilac and ivory, offered only a stoic Mona Lisa smile at the end of her speech, greeted with a 2-minute ovation. As on her previous public events this week in Switzerland and Norway, she spoke with a voice of unerring crisp diction but a physical presence bordering on exhaustion.

Yet Saturday's schedule offered no letup. She left the city hall for the neighboring Nobel Peace Center where artists had designed an interactive display called "Mother Democracy" chronicling the highlights of her life. She chatted in Burmese with about 300 refugees from Myanmar granted asylum in Norway.

Then she addressed a public rally that attracted about 10,000 Oslo locals and tourists, many from foreign cruise liners docked along the capital's nearby shoreline. Many waved Norwegian flags and leaflets bearing Suu Kyi's image as she thanked the Norwegian people for giving so many of her countrymen and women sanctuary from oppression.

Smiling with delight as church bells tolled, she also led the crowd in Burmese chants wishing everyone peace and happiness.

"Suu Kyi is such an incredible person. It's a blessing to be here, to get the once-in-a-lifetime chance to see her, to hear her," said Javier Rodriguez, 50, an airline steward from Los Angeles who happened to be on an Oslo layover and staked out the peace center before Suu Kyi's arrival.

"There's so few people in the world willing to sacrifice everything for justice and peace. She's in the same league as Nelson Mandela. Everyone should cherish and honor her," he said.

In her Nobel speech, Suu Kyi related her long experience of state-ordered isolation to key precepts of her Buddhist faith, particularly two forms of suffering: Being forced to live apart from loved ones, and being forced to live among those one dislikes. She referred only fleetingly to the Myanmar authorities' refusal to permit her husband, the Buddhist scholar Michael Aris, to see her from 1995 until his death from cancer in 1999.

Instead she emphasized the continued suffering of others. She won spontaneous applause from the crowd as she appealed for foreign governments to understand that many hundreds of political prisoners remain in Myanmar.

"It is to be feared that because the best known detainees have been released, the remainder, the unknown ones, will be forgotten. I am standing here because I was once a prisoner of conscience. As you look at me and listen to me, please remember the often repeated truth that one prisoner of conscience is one too many," she said.

She said it was unrealistic to expect the world ever to reach a state of "absolute peace," yet mankind must be compelled to pursue the goal "as a traveler in a desert fixes his eyes on the one guiding star that will lead him to salvation. Even if we do not achieve perfect peace on earth, because perfect peace is not of this earth, common endeavors to gain peace will unite individuals and nations in trust and friendship, and help us to make our human community safer and kinder."

And Suu Kyi praised the value of simple, every-day acts of human kindness as the most powerful force in promoting peace anywhere. " Every kindness I received, small or big," she said, referring to her 15 years of house arrest or imprisonment, "convinced me that there could never be enough of it in our world."

On Sunday she heads to the Norwegian city of Bergen to meet charities and members of Norway's Burmese refugee community, then on Monday speaks alongside U2 singer Bono before the pair fly to Dublin, Ireland, for a celebrity-studded concert in her honor. On Tuesday she starts engagements in England, including a visit to her Oxford University alma mater and a speech to the joint houses of Parliament.

?What a Moron!?? Media's Outlook on Fatherhood | Wayne A. Malcolm

Fatherhood in today?s society

When we think of parenting in today?s society I think it?s safe to say that we usually just think of the mom as the parent who is capable of properly taking care of the children. ?Our media is at fault, from t.v shows, movies, commercials and parenting magazines; ?fathers are always portrayed as being incapable of taking care of their children. ?They show men as being confused, immature, irresponsible and just flat out morons.

The movie Daddy Daycare starring Eddie Murphy is the perfect example of a movie that exemplifies the characteristics that I just mentioned. ?In Daddy Daycare Eddie Murphy?s character (Charlie Hinton) gets laid off from his job, when this happens he is forced to take his son out of an exclusive academy for kids, leading him to the idea of starting a day care ran with his friend played by Jeff Garlin ( Phil). ?There are two important things I want to shed light on from this movie, and they are the fact that both these men were laid off from their jobs which means they can not support their families like ?real men? are supposed to. ?In chapter 7 of?Julia T Wood?s Gendered Lives, she talks about how men are supposed to be when growing up, and two of those traditional characteristics are not being female and being successful. ?First off lets be honest when you think of a day care you never?in-vision men to be working there, and secondly these men were laid off from their jobs so we automatically start thinking how will they provide for their family? ?Throughout this movie the dads just plain and simply look?confused. ?Another movie that shows the characteristics talked about earlier is the movie What to Expect When Expecting. The trailer to the movie What to Expect When Expecting really bothers me because they show men not watching their kids properly, they are in the park throwing around beer, and one character even brags about how he forgot to pick up his kid from day care.

The Simpsons, Malcolm In the Middle, Family Guy are shows on television we have seen or if not heard about. ?Homer Simpson is the father in The Simpsons, he is shown as being forgetful, loud and ignorant, and always at the bar with his friends; ?Malcolm In the Middle?s dad is played by Bryan Cranston (Hal) and this character is shown to have no back bone, only disciplining his kids when he is forced to back up his wife?s decisions, also when she leaves for any period of time during the show Hal does things like smoking, gambling, blaring loud music and building ?killer? robots. ?In the case of Peter Griffin, the father in Family Guy, he is shown as being a ?moron? ?who is always seeking sex from his wife and talking down to his kids.

If you were to go back 20 to 30 years and watch the shows on television such as?The Cosby Show and The Brady Bunch the fathers in those shows were shown in an extremely different light, Bill Cosby?s character (Cliff Huxtable) and Robert Reed?s character (Mike Brady) were seen as?lovable?caring fathers who were always there for the kids, they knew what to say in times of need, and then they were also hard working men. So why is there such a big difference between men on television now and from 30 years ago?

Lets take a look at what fathers are really doing

Media definitely plays a part in how we look at men being fathers in our society but what we see on television and what fathers are actually doing are two complete different things. ?When you have a family with both parents and children involved, work schedules start to play a major role in how each parent may spend time with the kids. ?In the journal ?Juggling Jobs and Kids? written by April Bray Field, she goes on to state that ?fathers who take a major responsibility for child care ease the burden of the ?second shift? for employed mothers, and they reduce maternal ?stress from work overload, anxiety about adequate childcare and supervision, and a shortage of time for rest and leisure.? ?With that being said, sometimes it is hard for fathers who do want to take greater responsibility in their children?s lives but because of the time and demand of their jobs it is harder on them.

Lets talk about how the scheduling between the mom and dad directly affect how men go about looking after their kids. ?Bray says that most men are going to be more responsible for looking after the kids if the wife has a part time job and if she has a non-day job where shes going to work at night. ?If the mom is working during the night time then that leaves the dad to have hours at night time to bond with their children and take care of them just like the mom does while he is at work. ?The psychological responsibility, which is the responsibility to plan remember coordinate and follow up on matters involving home and family is usually a role adopted by women, but in the case of a mom working during the night such as a nurse this leave the ?psychological responsibility? duties with the father. ?My aunt in New York is actually a nurse and I remember when I would visit my cousins on summer vacations my uncle did a great job taking care of us while my aunt went to work at night, taking us to the movies, going to the mall and doing activities at home with that were fun.

Our outlook on single fathers

Whenever you think of the single parent lets be honest you think of a mom who was left behind with 2 or 3 kids because her dead beat husband ran off and isn?t taking responsibility for his children. ?Once again the media can be blamed for this perception. ?Why don?t we ever think about the dads who are out there by themselves working and providing for their kids and themselves? ?This may go back to the notion that since men are supposed to be able to take care of themselves and family that they we don?t need acknowledge the single father.

From the journal ?Single Custodial Fathers? Involvement and Parenting: Implications for Outcomes in Emerging Adulthood? by?Bronte-Tinkew, J., Scott, M. E., & Lilja, E; in a study on father involvement with?adolescents, research suggested that?adolescents report greater levels of single-custodial-father involvement than do adolescents with fathers from other family types. ?Bronte-Tinkew, J., Scott, M. E., & Lilja, E go on to say, ?Single custodial fathers spend significantly more time with their children engaging in activities, such as participating in leisure activities, talking, reading, and helping with homework compared to married fathers and step fathers.? ?We can easily try and say that well since they are the only parent, they have no choice but to take responsibility for their children but they could easily be away from their child by dropping the kids off with the grandparents or even leaving them at home while they go out about their own business. ?In the show Two and a Half-Men actor Jon-Cryer plays the role of a single father (Alan Harper), this is actually one of the shows in today?s media that shows a dad who is trying his best to provide for his son. ?Although he may seem flustered at times during the show, in large part because of his brother which is played by Charlie Sheen?s character (Charlie), this is a good example of television showing a different side of today?s father.

Alan single father

This is something I can personally relate to since for a large part of my life it was just my father and I until he re-married. ?Just like the study results said that single fathers were more involved with leisure activities, home work, talking and etc.. my dad was just like that. He had to work during the day time and I would go to a baby sitter after school but when he picked me up after work, everything he did was to make sure I was happy.

Lets stop making assumptions

In conclusion we have seen that our?perspectives on?dads in today?s society is driven by our media and what they show us. ?Just because we see television shows and movies that portray the moronic dad who can?t get out of his own way, lets not just assume every dad is like that. ?If you are a kid who has grown up without a dad how do you think they feel about ?father figures? when they watch the above mentioned movies and t.v shows? Lets take our dads seriously and?dispel the notions seen in our media.
