The fight began last year when Apple sued Samsung in multiple countries, accusing the South Korean company of slavishly copying the iPhone and iPad. Samsung countersued. Apple had sought more than $2.5 billion in damages from Samsung, which has disputed that figure.
The companies are rivals, but also have a $5 billion-plus supply relationship. Apple is Samsung?s biggest customer for microprocessors and other parts central to Apple?s devices.
A NEAR CLEAN SWEEP?
The U.S. jury spent most of August in a packed federal courtroom in San Jose ? just miles from Apple?s headquarters in Cupertino ? listening to testimony, examining evidence and watching lawyers from both sides joust about seven Apple patents, five Samsung patents, and damage claims.
Jurors received 100 pages of legal instructions from U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh on Aug. 21 prior to hearing the closing arguments from attorneys.
Lawyers from both tech giants used their 25 hours each of trial time to present internal emails, draw testimony from designers and experts, and put on product demonstrations and mockups to convince the jury.
At times, their questions drew testimony that offered glimpses behind the corporate facade, such as the margins on the iPhone and Samsung?s sales figures in the United States.
From the beginning, Apple?s tactic was to present what it thought was chronological evidence of Samsung copying its phone.
Juxtaposing pictures of phones from both companies and internal Samsung emails that specifically analyzed the features of the iPhone, Apple?s attorneys accused Samsung of taking shortcuts after realizing it could not keep up.
Samsung?s attorneys, on the other hand, maintained Apple had no sole right to geometric designs such as rectangles with rounded corners. They called Apple?s damage claim ?ridiculous? and urged the jury to consider that a verdict in favor of Apple could stifle competition and reduce choices for consumers.

After several months of sporadic reports indicating that Chinese property prices may be going back up, and intense debate over how the government would react, in July it begins to look even more like we will very soon find out the answer to the latter.
This is because the government house price data is now coming in positive. According to the National Bureau of Statistics Chinese house prices grew by an average 0.1% in July, following a similarly small growth in the previous month leaving prices 1.5% down on the year. The index also found prices up in 49 out of 70 cities in July, compared to 25 out of 70 cities in June.
"A new trend does appear to be materializing as home prices continue on an upward trajectory after the Chinese government began to loosen certain levers to address concerns around a slowing economy," Mark Budden, China area leader at consultancy EC Harris, said in a note after the data.
"It's still a little premature to label the slowdown over as certain macro-economic factors could yet threaten this recovery and, if the market does begin to heat up again, the central government is likely to step in to curb speculation," he added.
The central government has made no bones about the fact that it is not ready to see prices growing again yet, and most analysts are in agreement that it will step in with new cooling measures if prices begin to see any real growth. Some are hopeful that the slowdown in the wider economy will prevent Beijing from clamping its jaws back around the property market, but the government statements continue to show real iron behind keeping property prices going down. We will probably find out soon enough.

Clinton also seeks to blame Republicans for the global financial crisis that rocked the country during President George W. Bush's final 18 months in office and at the beginning of Obama's term. Economists have myriad theories for what contributed to the Great Recession. They frequently mention financial deregulation as a contributing factor, but it's rare for them to cite the Bush-era tax cuts as a primary driver of a crisis that had its roots in lax lending standards and risky bank investments.
Romney has indeed called for cutting income tax rates, but he is proposing 20 percent rate cuts for everyone ? not just the wealthiest. He also would eliminate taxes paid on capital gains and dividends for those with incomes below $200,000.

AT&T says it's not breaking FCC rules because FaceTime comes preinstalled on iPhones. The company claims the FCC rule in question only applies to apps you download to your device. (There are several third-party apps for iPhone such as Skype and ooVoo that let you video chat using a cellular data connection).
I'm not going to pretend to be an expert in net neutrality and FCC rules. I'm sure AT&T is smart enough not to break the law. (I know many of you who are a lot smarter than me may disagree, so feel free to explain why in the comments below).
The problem is AT&T is restricting a hot feature on the most popular phone on the planet in a move that seems designed to push people towards the more expensive shared data plans that go into effect starting this month.
Since AT&T killed off its unlimited data plan more than a year ago, you can only buy tiered plans where you get a certain amount of data usage per month. If you go over, AT&T slaps you with a charge for an additional GB of data for the month. And that's fine! I understand bandwidth can be limited, and it makes sense to charge people to use it.
What doesn't make sense is telling customers?how they can use the data they bought.?
For a lot of people, it's going to be more expensive to switch to a mobile share plan from the normal individual tiered plans. That's because AT&T structures its shared plans so you can buy a block of data to use each month and split the usage among all your devices. It's not a good deal if you're not a heavy data user or just have one smartphone on your plan.
Now are the mobile share plans more expensive for?everyone? No. If you have a lot of smartphones, hotspots, and tablets that use AT&T's data connection, then it probably makes financial sense for you to get on board.?
But that doesn't apply to a lot of AT&T customers. For individuals, you're forced to either live without Apple's FaceTime over cellular or pay more for the privilege to use it.
Simply put, this a dumb, sneaky move by AT&T, especially since its competitor?Sprint won't limit how customers use FaceTime over cellular. Verizon hasn't come out with a statement on the issue, but based on the way it structures its data plans now, you shouldn't have a problem using FaceTime over cellular. Even more embarrassing for AT&T:?T-Mobile announced this morning that it's going to offer customers unlimited 4G data plans. No slowdowns. No data caps. Just unlimited data usage like we enjoyed in the good old days.
It's a dangerous, slippery slope to limit smartphone features on a device just because a customer doesn't sign up for the most expensive data plan. If you buy data, it should be your data to use as you want.
Unfortunately for AT&T customers, that's not your carrier's policy.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who is out-fundraising President Barack Obama by impressive margins, is attracting thousands of donors this summer from traditionally Democratic areas of the United States, collecting millions of dollars in even progressive communities from New York to Los Angeles, according to an analysis by The Associated Press of new campaign data.
Donors from tony neighborhoods of Manhattan to even the famously liberal Castro neighborhood in San Francisco helped Romney and the GOP outraise Obama by more than $25 million in July, beating him and the Democratic Party in contributions for a third consecutive month, the AP analysis showed.
Romney collected at least $630,000 by mid-summer from New York City, the home to major Romney fundraiser and New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. More than $100,000 of that came from investment bankers, who have cooled to Obama since he supported tougher regulations for Wall Street following the financial meltdown and housing crisis in recent years.
More than 2,000 miles away on the West Coast, Romney collected at least $350,000 since June in the San Francisco Bay Area alone, with average contributions of $400 apiece. The Bay Area is also the home of Dick Boyce, a former partner of Romney's at Bain Capital and a GOP super PAC donor who is active in fundraising for Romney this election.
The money race has become a critical bellwether in the presidential campaign, which is expected to cost more than $1 billion. Obama is not only losing the money race but also is being outspent on the airwaves, thanks to millions of dollars in ads from independent "super" political committees funded by wealthy donors who oppose Obama and his policies.
Romney and the Republican Party are also making financial inroads in traditionally liberal cities across the nation, including Austin, Texas, and Obama's hometown of Chicago. These include small and large contributions, from $200 to the maximum $30,800 allowed under federal law to political parties each year.
In Denver, the home of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, Romney supporters this summer contributed more than $400,000 ? enough to pay rent, utilities and staff for a campaign field office. And in Philadelphia, where Obama handily beat McCain four years ago, Romney took in more than $250,000 since early June.
Romney's campaign has made a furious effort in recent months to step up its fundraising against Obama, who came to office four years ago with a fundraising operation that brought in a record-breaking $750 million for his election. Romney's campaign set an ambitious goal earlier this year of more than $100 million by summer's end with a goal of $800 million by November.
But now, Obama and his advisors publicly acknowledge the president will likely be outspent by November. Romney and the GOP reported a combined $101 million in fundraising last month, while Obama and the Democrats together said they raised $75 million.
Romney supporters have pointed to a withered economy and have said failed promises are driving contributions to the former Massachusetts governor's campaign for the last two months. A Florida donor for Romney, who raised $10,000 alone at a lunch this week, said donors represented to him they are mostly upset with the economy or are business owners unhappy with regulations. The donor spoke on condition of anonymity because he's not allowed to speak for the campaign.
The AP's analysis mapped addresses of a quarter-million donors to the GOP or Romney's presidential campaign. It then cross-referenced those records with traditionally Democratic city or metro area boundaries and examined ZIP codes for which donors have seldom, if ever, contributed to the Republican candidate.
The analysis excluded supporters who gave fewer than $200 because, under federal law, campaigns aren't required to disclose details about such small contributions. High-dollar donors have been essential to Romney's election effort, unlike Obama, who relies on a greater share of smaller checks.
The Democratic National Committee and Obama both spent more than they took in last month as the president expanded his campaign operations and purchased millions of dollars in television advertising to compete with rival Mitt Romney and millions of dollars in super PAC ads working in his favor.
To be sure, while Romney for now has a significant financial advantage, he is trailing Obama in terms of paid staffers who in part coordinate the campaign's ground operations. The new finance reports show Obama's campaign paid about 800 staffers around the nation ? not counting volunteers ? while Romney had fewer than half that number.
