Sea Level Rise Can't Be Stopped

Here's a quick inventory of problems to cope with.

Florida has a maximum land height of 42 feet. A three foot rise in see level, plus shore erosion due to larger and more frequent storms could reduce Florida to a stub of the current state with central islands where the everglades are now.

Expanded erosion of barrier island and sand dunes along the gulf and eastern seaboard will eliminate thousands of square miles of existing shoreline, destroying some of the most valuable property in the country.

Much of the Mississippi delta and most of Louisiana will simply go away (a great deal of which is already below sea level due to subsidence from poor river engineering by the Army Corp of Engineers.)

The West Coast won't pass unscathed, because towns along the bays in both southern and northern California, will suffer significant land loss.

The simple fact is that the big cities of the world are virtually all coastal cities and as such will be seriously impacted. The amount of land shared be people and critters will shrink a couple percent (large coastal plains will be inundated... kiss Bangladesh and a number of small islands in the South Pacific goodbye.)

You bet we can engineer around it. Move cities slowly back. Build higher dikes and levees. Abandon places that are hopeless. Its just one more cost, and significant cost to consider as we continue to spew greenhouse gas into the air.

Researchers and communities at risk join forces in volcano study

People living in the shadow of six potentially active volcanoes will take part in a major new study exploring better ways to forecast and cope with future eruptions.

Led by the University of East Anglia (UEA) and launched today, the 3 million project will focus on six volcanoes in Latin America and the Caribbean. Volcanologists, social scientists, and international development experts will work closely with the communities directly at risk to improve preparations for and responses to dynamic volcanic activity.

"In this exciting and novel project we will be collaborating with those responsible for local monitoring of volcanoes, with the disaster managers and policy makers in charge of planning for and responding to eruptions, and with ordinary people living and working in the shadow of active volcanoes. The local communities have a vast wealth of knowledge and this will be a real two-way learning process," said project leader Dr Jenni Barclay of UEA's School of Environmental Sciences.

This will be the first major UK-led study to integrate the experience of communities at risk with the approaches of natural and social scientists to find new and achievable ways to reduce risk.

'Strengthening Resilience in Volcanic Areas' (STREVA) is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of their 'Increasing Resilience to Natural Hazards' program. The unique, five-year interdisciplinary study brings together volcano experts and international development specialists from UEA, the University of Oxford, University of Bristol, University of Leeds, the British Geological Survey and the Overseas Development Institute along with overseas project partners. The team will develop and apply novel risk analyses with the aim of reducing the negative consequences of volcanic activity on people and assets.

"There are 1500 potentially active volcanoes in the world with around 20 erupting at any one time. Because they are located disproportionately in poorer countries, this can make the impact of eruptions all the more devastating and we hope the outcomes of this study will make a real difference to the lives of those affected," said Anna Hicks, a UEA researcher on the project.

The researchers will use the latest volcano monitoring techniques and data including from the new Sentinel satellites due to be launched next year by the European Space Agency - to improve forecasts of future eruptions at six volcanoes: Soufrire Hills (Montserrat); Galeras (Columbia); Tungurahua (Ecuador); Soufrire St Vincent (St Vincent); Cerro Machin (Colombia), and Cotopaxi (Ecuador).

Scientists will learn from the communities devastated by recent eruptions, and will speak with survivors, to build up a comprehensive picture of the common factors that shape how a community deals with and recovers from a volcanic disaster. They hope to help communities that may never have experienced an eruption before cope with any future eruptions by learning from the past, and to produce models that will enable societies to plan and prepare for problems and mitigate the effects of an eruption.

Dr Roger Few, of UEA's School of International Development, will be leading the research work on vulnerability. He said: "We'll focus on the impact of volcanic hazards on the lives and livelihoods of people living in the vicinity of volcanoes, and investigate the factors that shape people's exposure. We'll also look at how differences in capacity affect a community's ability to mitigate, prepare for and recover from hazards."

At the recent Rio +20 summit 'disaster risk reduction' was one of seven topics identified as needing urgent attention. The summit's final agreement - 'The future we want' - calls for the subject to be addressed "with a renewed sense of urgency in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, and, as appropriate, to be integrated into policies, plans, programmes and budgets at all levels and considered within relevant future frameworks."

STREVA will work towards the Rio +20 summit agreement, and will have real impacts in real places and significantly advance the fields of volcanic risk analysis and disaster risk reduction.

Death Valley heat in Kansas? How the end of June got so hot.

Norton Dam, Kan., hit 118 F. on Thursday, and?32 communities from Colorado to Indiana just posted their highest temperatures ever. Forecasters say back-to-back La Ni?as are partly to blame.

Across the US, high-temperature records are falling like beads of sweat, thanks in part to back-to-back La Ni?as and a current jet-stream pattern that is steering storm systems coming off the Pacific well up into Canada.

These records appear to be falling into step with a longer-term trend in which record highs are being set more often than record lows for each decade since the 1970s ? a trend many climate researchers have attributed to global warming.

As June 2012 draws to a close, it feels more like mid-July or August to people in wide swaths of the country.

Between June 27 and June 28, 32 communities stretching from Colorado to Indiana posted the highest temperatures on record ever for their locations ? with a handful tying or topping records set only a few days before, according to data kept by the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C.

Norton Dam, Kan., for instance, recorded an all-time record of 118 degrees F. on Thursday, two degrees above Death Valley's July average. The 118-degree reading shattered Norton Dam's previous record of 113 degrees F. ? set just three days before.

More than 350 sites across a broad swath of the continent's interior have posted daily record highs since June 27, with heat advisories on Friday covering all or parts of 23 states from Kansas east to the Carolinas and into the Northeast, and from Wisconsin south to Mississippi and Alabama.

At the same time, other parts of the country are reporting record lows for this time of year.

Anyone looking for relief might put the Northwest on their itinerary. Over the same two-day period, 57 locations, largely clustered in Washington state and northeastern Oregon, posted at least one daily high temperature that tied or beat the lowest for the date on which it was measured. Waterville, Wash., posted the biggest drop among the group ? a high of 51 degrees on Wednesday, nine degrees below the previous record-low high of 60 degrees on June 27, 1946.

And it's all coming out of a spring that was the warmest on record in the US, bringing a heat wave to the center of the country in March the likes of which the US hasn't seen since 1910. Indeed, Spring 2012 in the US was 2 degrees warmer than the previous record-holder, the spring of 1910.

One reason for the seemingly relentless high temperatures is the presence of a broad ridge of high pressure inching its way across the continent, forecasters say. With skies generally clear, sunlight has a clear path to travel on its way to baking what in many places is an already parched surface.

As of Tuesday, a broad swath of the US was experiencing either severe or extreme drought, according to the National Drought Mitigation Center, based at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

The vast majority of the region stretching from southern Texas north into Nebraska and across to eastern California is experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions that in some cases have lasted for more than a year. Similar conditions cover a patch of the country from Arkansas northeastward through parts of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Indiana. A similar patter is persisting in the Southeast from eastern Mississippi through Georgia and into South Carolina, with some areas there experiencing exceptional drought conditions.

London 2012 Olympics: Gareth Bale ruled out

Tottenham winger Gareth Bale has suffered an injury that will rule him out of Great Britain's Olympic football squad.

Bale was widely anticipated to be included in manager Stuart Pearce's GB team for the Olympic tournament starting at the end of next month.

But it is understood the 22-year-old Wales international has suffered a recurrence of an old back and hip injury after pulling up while running.

Bale is understood to be reluctant to risk aggravating the problem further, with Tottenham's Barclays Premier League opener at Newcastle just seven weeks away.

The player, who earlier this week pledged his future to Spurs by signing a new four-year contract to 2016, is believed to have already informed Pearce of his decision to make himself unavailable for selection after taking medical advice.

Bale had been held up as a likely star turn for Team GB, and his absence will come as a further blow to fans already shocked by Pearce's controversial decision to omit former England captain David Beckham from his squad.

Bale has previously made little secret of his desire to represent GB at the Olympics, and last year risked the wrath of the Welsh FA by posing in a British Olympic team shirt without their permission.

The Welsh, Northern Irish and Scottish FAs have been vocal in their opposition to providing players to a British team since the Games were awarded to London, although the Welsh have long been resigned to a number of their players taking part.

Team GB have been drawn in Group A at the London Games with Senegal, Uruguay and United Arab Emirates.

Pearce's men begin their campaign against Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26 before playing the UAE at Wembley on July 29 and Uruguay at the Millennium Stadium on August 1.
